These businesses supply the data and signals a sales team needs to work a list that's actually worth working: verified contact details, org charts, company firmographics, technology stacks, funding events, hiring trends, and — increasingly — signs that a specific account is in-market right now. Hire one and what changes is simple: reps stop cold-guessing who to call and start prioritising accounts with a reason to buy, with a phone number and email that still work.
The trigger is usually a CRM full of dead contacts and a pipeline that doesn't match the target market. Reps are burning hours on LinkedIn trying to find the right person at an account, marketing is sending emails that bounce, and nobody can say with confidence which companies are actually shopping. Lists bought years ago have decayed — people change jobs constantly — and the sales team's instinct for who's a good fit isn't backed by any data on firmographics or buying signals.
Providers tackle this from different angles. Some are primarily data businesses: they build and maintain databases of contacts and companies, sourced from public filings, web crawling, partner networks or user-contributed data, then sell access via credits or seats. Others focus on intent — tracking web and content consumption to flag accounts researching a problem you solve, often layered on top of a data feed rather than replacing it. A separate group specialises in the harder, narrower job of registries and licensing data for regulated roles like brokers, where accuracy has legal consequences.
When comparing them, look past the feature list to the sourcing and refresh rate: how the contact and firmographic data is collected, how often it's verified, and what happens when it's wrong. Compare coverage by region and industry — a database strong in US tech accounts may be thin on European manufacturing. Check integration depth with your CRM and outbound tools, since data that sits in a separate dashboard rarely gets used. And weigh pricing models carefully: per-seat licensing suits steady daily use, while credit-based pricing can get expensive fast if your team pulls data in bulk.
