These businesses build the software that companies use to get contracts drafted, negotiated, signed, filed and then actually watched over once they're live. In practice that means a template and clause library so a sales rep or procurement manager can generate a standard agreement without waiting on legal, a workflow that routes it for approval and redlines, tools for negotiating the wording back and forth with the other side, e-signature to close it out, and a searchable repository afterwards that tells you what every contract says, when it renews, and what you've committed to. Increasingly it also means AI that reads existing contracts and pulls out key terms — pricing, notice periods, liability caps — without a human having to open every PDF.

People start looking for this when contracts have become a source of risk rather than just paperwork. Agreements live scattered across email threads, shared drives and a legal team's inbox, so nobody can say with confidence what was actually agreed, or find the one clause that matters when a dispute comes up. Renewal dates get missed and contracts auto-renew on old pricing. Sales is waiting days for legal to turn around a redline while a deal cools. Procurement can't tell which supplier contracts carry which payment terms. An audit or a new investor asks for a clean view of every customer or vendor obligation, and it doesn't exist. The common thread is that contracts are being managed by memory and folders, and that stops working once volume or scrutiny goes up.

Vendors here split mainly on how much of that chain they own and how they get you there. Some are workflow-and-repository tools built to plug into your existing process — CRM for sales contracts, procurement systems for vendor ones — and they compete on how good the search, reporting and integration actually are once contracts are loaded. Others lead with AI extraction, aimed squarely at the problem of a backlog of old paper contracts nobody has ever properly indexed. Some focus on the negotiation stage itself, with redlining built for legal teams working in Word or directly in-browser with the counterparty. A few are closer to full legal operations platforms, with contract management as one module among several.

What's worth comparing: how contracts actually get negotiated day to day (Word-based redlining versus a shared online editor), how much of the AI claims hold up on your own contract types rather than a generic demo, how painful it is to migrate and index your existing archive, whether the tool is built more for legal, for sales, or for procurement workflows, and whether pricing scales sensibly as your contract volume — not just your headcount — grows.
