These vendors sell the infrastructure behind account-based marketing: tools that let you name the specific companies you want as customers, watch for signals that those companies are in a buying cycle, and then run coordinated campaigns — display ads, personalised web pages, email, direct mail — aimed at the actual people inside those accounts rather than at anonymous form-fills. Once in place, marketing stops measuring itself on lead volume and starts measuring account engagement: who at the target company is reading what, which departments are showing up, and whether the account as a whole is moving toward a buying decision. Sales gets a different kind of handoff — not a name and email address, but a picture of an account's activity across multiple contacts.
People go looking for this when the usual lead-gen approach has stopped matching how their business actually sells. That's typically a company with a defined, finite list of accounts it needs to win — often enterprise or complex B2B deals with several stakeholders — where inbound leads keep arriving from companies that were never going to buy, while the accounts that matter show no engagement at all until a deal is already half-lost to a competitor. Sales and marketing start arguing about lead quality, deals stall because only one buyer at the account was ever contacted, and nobody can say which target accounts are actively researching the company versus which have gone quiet.
The products differ mainly in how much of the problem they take on. Some are purely data providers, supplying intent or firmographic signals that you feed into your own CRM or marketing automation platform; others are full orchestration platforms that also build the ad campaigns, personalise the web experience and manage the workflow end to end. Predictive and AI-scoring vendors focus on telling you which accounts to prioritise; advertising-led platforms focus on reaching the people at those accounts wherever they browse. When comparing them, look at what signals they actually use (intent, technographic, engagement, or self-reported), how deep the integration goes with the CRM and marketing automation you already run, how many accounts and contacts the pricing model assumes, and how much strategic setup — segmentation, messaging, channel selection — is left for your team to do versus handled by the platform.
