These vendors provide the machinery for running a giveaway, contest, or referral promotion without doing it by hand. That means hosted entry forms and landing pages, rules for how someone qualifies (follow an account, refer a friend, submit a photo, answer a question), automated and auditable winner selection, and a way to pull the entrant data straight into an email list or CRM. Some are built specifically around social actions on Facebook and Instagram, judging photo or video submissions; others are built around viral referral loops, where sharing earns extra entries and the campaign grows itself; others sit closer to a general lead-generation tool with a sweepstakes module bolted on.

The usual trigger is a marketing or growth team that wants to run a promotion fast — a product launch, a seasonal giveaway, a push to grow a mailing list before an event — and finds that doing it manually doesn't hold up. Entries tracked in a spreadsheet, winners picked by eyeballing a comments section, screenshots taken as proof: it's slow, it's easy to get wrong, and it leaves no defence if someone disputes the result. There's also a legal exposure most people don't think about until it bites them — sweepstakes law varies by state and country, and an unofficial giveaway with no rules, no age-gating, and no odds disclosure is a liability, not a marketing win. On top of that, open giveaways attract bots and duplicate entries, which wrecks the lead quality the campaign was supposed to deliver.

What separates these tools in practice is where the compliance and fraud-prevention work actually happens, and how well the campaign hands off to whatever you use afterwards. Some auto-generate official rules and terms, handle age and geography restrictions, and run randomised, timestamped winner selection you can point to if challenged; others leave more of that to you. Integration depth matters too — whether entrant data flows cleanly into Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot, or Shopify, or whether you're exporting CSVs and re-importing by hand. Pricing splits between per-campaign fees and flat monthly plans, which matters if you run one big promotion a year versus a steady stream of smaller ones. And the referral-heavy tools are worth comparing separately from the social-contest tools, since a viral share mechanic and a judged photo contest solve different growth problems even though both get filed under the same heading.
