These providers sell access to signals that show a company is in market before anyone from that company has filled in a form or spoken to a rep. In practice that means tracking things like which firms are researching particular topics or keywords across the open web, visiting review sites and comparison pages, consuming certain content, or bidding on relevant ad inventory, then rolling that activity up into an account-level (or sometimes contact-level) score that gets pushed into a CRM, ABM platform, or sales engagement tool. What changes for a customer is timing: instead of finding out an account is interested only when it converts on a form, marketing and sales get an earlier signal and can prioritise outreach, tailor messaging, or trigger ad targeting while the account is still researching.

The people who go looking for this are usually watching their pipeline underperform in a specific way. Sales reps are calling and emailing accounts cold, with no idea whether the prospect is actually shopping for a solution right now or just fits a firmographic profile. Marketing is spending on outbound and ABM programmes aimed at target accounts that show no sign of active interest, while other accounts that are actively comparing vendors go untouched because nobody knew they were looking. Lead volume from forms and gated content is flat or declining, and the sales and marketing teams have no shared view of what's happening upstream of a demo request or a trial sign-up.

The providers close that gap by collecting and interpreting different kinds of signal, and this is where they genuinely diverge. Some rely on cooperative data networks built from B2B publisher and content partnerships, which tend to give reliable topic-level signal but only where those publishers have reach. Others pull from bidstream and programmatic ad exchange data, which gives broader coverage but raises more questions about data provenance and compliance, particularly outside the US. A separate group focuses on identifying and scoring anonymous visitors to your own website (first-party intent) rather than intent shown elsewhere on the web, which is a different problem to solve and usually a complement rather than a substitute for third-party data.

When comparing them, look past the intent score itself and check what it's built from, how the account or contact identity resolution actually works, and whether coverage matches your target industries and geographies rather than being strongest in adtech-heavy US markets. Ask how the signal gets delivered — a dashboard you have to check, or an alert that triggers a workflow in your CRM or sales tool — because that determines whether reps actually act on it. And weigh transparency: providers differ a lot in how willing they are to explain where a signal came from, which matters both for trusting the data and for staying on the right side of privacy rules.
