These are the tools and plugins used to keep WordPress sites running once they're live — not the page builders that create a site, but the layer that maintains it afterwards. In practice that means one dashboard from which you push core, theme and plugin updates across many sites at once, schedule and store backups, monitor uptime and malware, and generate reports for clients or stakeholders. Some are built for developers who need custom fields, forms or specific data structures inside WordPress; others are purely operational, aimed at agencies or in-house teams who just need every site patched and backed up without visiting each one.
The person searching for this usually manages more than a handful of WordPress sites — an agency with client sites, a company running several brand or regional sites, or a freelancer who's outgrown logging into each wp-admin individually. The trigger is often a bad update that broke a client site with no recent backup, a security scare, or simply the realisation that nobody actually knows which of twenty sites are still on old plugin versions. There's no visibility across the estate, updates get skipped because they're risky to do manually, and something eventually breaks in front of a client.
Providers solve this in slightly different ways. Some install an agent or connector on each site and manage everything from a central hosted dashboard; others work agentlessly via SSH or hosting APIs, which matters if you're not allowed to install extra plugins on client sites. They differ in backup depth (full-site versus database-only, how fast restores actually are, where backups are stored), in whether staging and one-click rollback are built in, and in how much security scanning goes beyond basic malware checks into firewalling and hardening. Agencies should also weigh white-label reporting and client billing features, since that's often the deciding factor over raw feature count. Pricing models vary too — per site, per account tier, or per number of sites managed — so the real comparison is how many sites you run today, how fast you're adding more, and whether you need developer-level customisation or just reliable, boring maintenance.
