These providers are hired to run the system that sits behind every page, app screen, portal and, in some cases, in-store kiosk a company shows to customers. That means content modelling and authoring tools, a delivery layer that pushes that content out to web, mobile and other channels, and a personalization engine that decides what a given visitor sees based on behaviour, segment or purchase history. Once one of these is in place, marketing and content teams can build and change pages, product listings or campaign landing sites themselves, target different content to different audiences, and roll the same content out across a website, an app and a partner portal without three separate builds.
Companies end up looking for this when their current setup has stopped keeping pace with how many channels and audiences they now serve. A basic CMS was fine for one website, but now there are regional sites, a customer portal, an app and a storefront, all needing different content but sharing the same product data and brand rules. Every small copy change or new landing page needs a developer, campaigns slip because marketing is queued behind IT, and personalization is either absent or bolted on with a separate tool that doesn't talk to the CMS. Content, commerce and customer data live in different systems, so the experience a customer gets on the website doesn't match what a sales rep or store associate sees.
The providers here split mainly on how they deliver content and how much they build in versus expect you to assemble. Some are headless-first, exposing content through APIs so your own developers build the front end in whatever framework they like, which gives control but means you own more of the build. Others are hybrid or fully coupled, shipping visual page builders, native personalization and drag-and-drop templates so marketing teams can work with less engineering involvement, at the cost of some flexibility. There's also a split by heritage: some grew out of ecommerce and are strongest on product data and merchandising, others grew out of content and document management and are stronger on governance, workflow and multi-brand publishing at scale. When comparing them, look at how content models are defined and reused across channels, how mature the personalization and recommendation engine actually is versus how much AI is marketing language, what the integration story looks like with your CRM, commerce platform and data warehouse, and whether the deployment model and licensing fit a mid-market team or an enterprise with dozens of sites and long implementation cycles.
