These businesses build and maintain the actual website a company puts in front of customers: the pages, the navigation, the contact forms, the checkout if it sells products, the hosting it runs on, and the domain and SSL certificate that make it a real, working address on the internet. Some are software platforms you use yourself, with drag-and-drop editors and templates that turn a blank page into a published site in a day. Others are agencies or freelance teams who use those same platforms, or WordPress underneath them, to design and build the site for you, then hand over something you can update without touching code.
People end up here for a small number of recurring reasons. There's no website at all yet, and the business is losing enquiries to competitors who show up first in search or look more credible online. There's an old site that was built years ago, looks dated, doesn't work properly on a phone, or nobody remembers the login for. There's a need to start selling online and the current site has no cart, no payment processing, no way to manage stock or orders. Or there's simply no one in the company who can build or edit a site, and paying a developer for every small change has become too slow and too expensive.
The fix usually takes one of three shapes: a self-service builder you configure yourself, a WordPress-based toolkit that gives more control at the cost of more setup, or a done-for-you service where someone else designs, builds and often maintains the site for you. What separates providers within each shape is worth comparing directly — how much design freedom you get versus how quickly you can launch, whether hosting, security and backups are bundled in or your problem, how deep the ecommerce features go if you need to sell more than a handful of products, how much SEO control you actually have over things like page speed and structured data, and what happens to your site and your content if you want to leave. The cheapest option to start is rarely the cheapest option to run once you need custom functionality, multiple languages, or someone to make monthly updates — so it's worth deciding upfront whether you're buying a tool you'll operate yourself or a service that operates it for you.
