These vendors are hired to find and close the gap between a website (or app, or PDF) and what a disabled person can actually use. That means running automated scans and manual audits — often with people who use screen readers, switch devices or magnification — against WCAG success criteria, then either handing over a list of code-level fixes (missing alt text, unlabelled form fields, poor colour contrast, keyboard traps, broken heading structure) or applying an overlay script that adjusts the page on the fly. Some also remediate PDFs, produce VPATs and accessibility statements for procurement, and set up ongoing monitoring so new pages don't quietly reintroduce old problems.

People usually land here after something forces the issue rather than out of general good intention. A demand letter or ADA lawsuit arrives referencing inaccessible checkout flows or unlabelled buttons. A public sector contract requires Section 508 conformance before a bid can even be considered. A screen reader user complains they can't complete a form, or an internal audit turns up hundreds of WCAG failures nobody on the dev or content team was trained to catch. Marketing and content teams keep publishing new pages faster than anyone can check them, so the problem regenerates itself even after an initial cleanup.

The main split is between fixing the underlying code and papering over it. Overlay and widget products sit as a script on top of your existing site and can improve compliance quickly and cheaply, but they don't touch your source, can behave unpredictably with assistive technology, and several have themselves been named in accessibility lawsuits. Remediation-focused vendors and agencies work directly in your codebase or CMS templates, which takes longer and costs more but produces a genuinely more usable site and a stronger legal position if challenged. Beyond that, compare how audits are done (automated only versus automated plus real assistive-technology testers), whether monitoring is continuous or a one-off report, how PDF and document accessibility is handled if that's a large part of your content, and whether the output includes documentation — VPATs, audit trails, statements — that will actually hold up if a customer or regulator asks for evidence.
