These vendors build the systems that store, encode, organise and deliver video at scale, then let a company control who sees it, where it plays and what happens after someone watches. In practice that means transcoding uploads into the right formats, serving them through a content delivery network so they load fast anywhere in the world, wrapping them in a branded player that can sit on a website, intranet or app, and layering on access controls, search, tagging and viewership analytics so the video is an asset rather than a file sitting somewhere unfindable.
People start looking for this when video has outgrown ad-hoc hosting. Training clips are scattered across shared drives, YouTube unlisted links or someone's laptop, and nobody can find the one they need. Marketing wants to embed video on the website without a competitor's ad appearing next to it. Sales needs to know whether a prospect actually watched the demo. Legal or security wants sensitive internal recordings — town halls, onboarding, compliance training — off public platforms and behind proper permissions. A media or events team is producing more footage than anyone can catalogue, and a broadcaster or publisher needs to monetise a library through subscriptions or ad insertion rather than give it away.
The providers here split along a few real lines. Some are built for internal communication and training, with single sign-on, LMS integration and granular permissioning as the priority over reach or monetisation. Others are built for public-facing video — marketing, product, OTT and live streaming — where ad insertion, lead-capture forms tied to a CRM and detailed watch-time analytics matter more than internal access control. A third group leans toward digital and media asset management, aimed at production and post teams who need to search, review and version huge libraries of raw and edited footage rather than just publish finished clips.
When comparing them, look at how they price (per gigabyte stored and streamed versus per seat versus flat platform fees, which behaves very differently once your library or audience grows), how deep the security and DRM options go if you're dealing with sensitive or paid content, how well the analytics tie back into tools you already use like a CRM or LMS, and whether the product is really optimised for live streaming, for on-demand libraries, or for editorial workflow — few do all three equally well.
