Businesses in this category are hired to find the photos, videos, reviews and social posts your customers are already creating, get permission to use them, and put them to work — embedded on product pages, pulled into ad creative, displayed on screens at events, or dropped into email campaigns. The day-to-day work is aggregation (pulling posts from Instagram, TikTok and other platforms by hashtag, mention or upload), moderation and rights management (asking permission, filtering out anything off-brand or unusable), and distribution (widgets, galleries, feeds, shoppable walls) that plug into a website or commerce platform.

People start looking for this when their own content pipeline can't keep up: the studio shoot budget is gone, the product feed looks the same as every competitor's, and conversion isn't moving because shoppers don't trust polished brand photography as much as a real customer's video. Often there's already a flood of usable content sitting on social media — customers tagging the brand, leaving photo reviews, posting unboxings — but no one has a process to find it, ask for rights, and get it onto the page where a buyer is deciding whether to purchase. Legal exposure from using someone's photo without permission, and the manual grind of screenshotting and re-uploading posts by hand, are usually part of what pushes someone to search.

Providers split mainly by where they sit in that pipeline and who they're built for. Some are closer to social listening tools — strong at hashtag and mention discovery across many platforms, with automated rights-request workflows. Others are built primarily for ecommerce, focused on getting UGC and photo reviews directly onto product detail pages to lift conversion, with tighter integrations into commerce platforms. A third group leans toward events and physical spaces — live walls, screens, kiosks. When comparing them, look at which platforms they actually pull from, how rights requests and moderation are handled (automated versus manual), how deep the ecommerce or ad-platform integration goes, and whether pricing is based on content volume, views, or seats, since that affects cost as usage grows.
