These platforms give hiring teams a way to test whether someone can actually do the technical work they're being hired for, before anyone spends time in an interview room. In practice that means building or selecting coding challenges, take-home projects, or live pairing exercises mapped to specific languages, frameworks or roles; running candidates through them at scale; and returning a score or a recording that a recruiter or engineering manager can act on. Some also proctor the test to catch cheating, benchmark results against other candidates, or plug the whole thing into an applicant tracking system so scores show up next to a resume automatically.

The people who go looking for this are usually stuck in one of two situations. Either their engineers are burning hours every week doing first-pass technical interviews on candidates who turn out not to be able to write working code, or they're hiring at a volume where phone screens alone can't tell the wheat from the chaff and unqualified candidates are reaching final rounds. Sometimes it's simpler than that: a fast-growing company has no consistent way to compare candidates against each other, so hiring decisions come down to whoever interviewed best, not who can actually do the job. Remote hiring makes this worse, since there's no whiteboard in a shared room to fall back on.

The providers split mainly on how real the test feels and how much manual review it replaces. Some lean on large libraries of standardised coding questions and auto-graded multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank formats, which scale cheaply but can feel disconnected from actual job tasks and are vulnerable to candidates who've memorised answer banks. Others focus on realistic, role-specific project simulations or live collaborative coding sessions that better reflect day-to-day work but need more setup and sometimes human grading. Worth comparing on: language and framework coverage for your stack, how seriously they handle cheating and proctoring, whether reporting is built for recruiters or for engineers, how well it integrates with your ATS, and whether pricing is per test, per seat, or per hire — that last one matters a lot once volume goes up.
