These businesses build and run the tests, games and structured exercises that measure whether a candidate can actually do the job, rather than just describe it well on a CV. That covers cognitive ability tests, personality and behavioural questionnaires, situational judgement scenarios, gamified assessments, video interview scoring, and skills tests for specific roles like coding or sales. The output is a score or profile for each candidate, benchmarked against either the role, a top-performer profile, or a normed population, which then feeds into the shortlist decision alongside the CV and interview.

People start looking for this when hiring has become a volume problem or a consistency problem. A graduate scheme or a hourly-retail role gets thousands of applicants and there's no way to interview them all, so someone needs a defensible way to filter early. Or hiring managers are picking candidates on gut feel and interview performance alone, and the resulting hires aren't working out, turnover is high, or promotions aren't going to the people who actually perform. Sometimes it's a compliance driver: legal or HR wants a documented, consistent process that can be defended if a hiring decision is challenged, because interview panels are inconsistent and prone to bias that nobody can quite name.

The providers differ mainly in what they measure and how they prove it works. Some lean on decades-old psychometric models with published validity studies and norms; others use newer game-based or AI-driven methods that claim to measure the same traits with less candidate fatigue and less obvious "test-taking" feel, but with a shorter evidence trail. Some are built for one type of decision, technical skills testing, sales aptitude, leadership potential, graduate screening, while others are general-purpose and configurable to any role. Worth comparing on: published validity and adverse-impact data rather than marketing claims, how long the assessment takes a candidate to complete, how well it integrates with your existing ATS, whether scoring is transparent enough to explain to a rejected candidate, and whether pricing is per assessment or per seat, which matters a lot at high volume.
