These vendors build the layer that sits on top of your CRM and call/dial data and turns it into something reps actually look at: live leaderboards, points, badges, streaks, and time-boxed contests tied to real KPIs like calls made, deals closed, or quota attainment. The actual work involves connecting to Salesforce or whatever CRM you run, mapping which activities and outcomes count as "scoring," building the contest logic (daily, weekly, team-vs-team, ramp challenges for new hires), and putting the results somewhere visible — a TV in the office, a mobile app, a Slack channel, a manager dashboard. What changes for the customer is that performance becomes visible in real time instead of surfacing at month-end commission runs, and running a sales contest goes from a manual spreadsheet exercise to something a manager can launch in minutes.
People land here because the energy has gone out of the sales floor, or was never there for a remote/hybrid team. Reps enter data into the CRM but nobody looks at it until forecasting calls. Managers used to run informal contests off a whiteboard or Excel sheet, and it either fell apart when people stopped updating it or it took hours of admin each week. New reps take too long to ramp because nothing shows them how they're pacing against peers. Turnover is high in an inside-sales or call-centre team and leadership suspects boredom and invisibility are part of it, not just comp. The comp plan is sound on paper but doesn't translate into daily behaviour because reps only see the payout, not the leading indicators.
The providers here split roughly into two camps: sales-specific tools that integrate deeply with CRM and dialler data and understand quota, ramp curves and coaching workflows, and broader employee-engagement or performance-management platforms where sales gamification is one module alongside recognition, learning and general HR use cases. That distinction matters more than feature lists — a generic engagement tool can badge anything, but it may not know what a qualified opportunity is or sync often enough to matter for a fast-moving sales floor. Worth comparing vendors on how deep and real-time the CRM integration actually is, how much contest logic you can customise without needing their support team, the mobile and TV/dashboard experience for distributed or field teams, how much admin time it takes a sales manager to launch and adjust a campaign, and whether pricing scales sensibly for a 10-person SDR pod versus a 500-seat contact centre.
