The businesses in this group tend to do one specific job inside the sales process rather than run the whole thing. That might mean building an ROI or business-case calculator a rep can walk a buyer through, warming up a mailbox so cold outreach stops landing in spam, automating connection requests and follow-ups on LinkedIn, scoring product usage so a PLG company knows which free users are worth a sales call, capturing and organising notes from sales calls automatically, or running incentive and leaderboard programmes to keep a sales floor motivated. Many plug directly into Salesforce or sit on Force.com as an add-on rather than replacing it.
People end up here because the core CRM and sales engagement stack doesn't cover a specific gap that's costing deals or slowing reps down. A rep can talk about features fine but can't put a number in front of an economic buyer that survives procurement. Outbound email open rates have collapsed because domains got flagged, and nobody in the team knows why. A product-led company has thousands of free signups and no reliable way to tell sales which ones are actually ready to buy. Reps forget to log calls, so the pipeline data is unreliable and managers are chasing notes instead of coaching. Or turnover is high and the sales floor has gone flat, and leadership wants something more concrete than a pep talk to re-energise it.
Because the problems are so different from each other, the tools don't compete directly with each other so much as with whatever manual workaround the team was using before — a spreadsheet ROI model, a VA doing LinkedIn outreach by hand, a sales manager listening back to call recordings. When comparing options within one of these workflows, look at how deep the integration goes with your existing CRM (a native Salesforce app behaves very differently to a bolt-on that syncs overnight), whether the tool is built for reps to use directly or for revops to configure and hand down, and whether pricing is per seat, per workflow, or usage-based, since that changes a lot depending on team size. It's also worth checking whether the vendor is solving your specific version of the problem or a nearby one that happens to look similar from the outside.
