Some run this as pure telemarketing, others layer in email sequences and account-based targeting across multiple channels, but the common thread is that they own the unglamorous, repetitive work of getting a stranger to say yes to a conversation.
Companies end up looking for this when their pipeline has gone quiet and there's no obvious reason why. Often it's that the sales team is full of closers who are bad at, or unwilling to do, cold outreach — so deals dry up between the leads marketing hands over. Sometimes it's a founder or a handful of account executives who've been prospecting themselves and can't sustain it alongside actually running the business or closing what they've already got. Other times it's a push into a new market or vertical where nobody internally has the contacts or the local knowledge to start cold, and hiring and training an in-house SDR team feels slow and expensive compared with just buying the capability.
Where these providers differ is worth digging into before you sign anything. Some are essentially call centres — high volume, scripted, priced per hour or per dial — which works if your offer is simple and your market is broad. Others specialise in more complex B2B sales cycles, doing genuine account research and multi-touch, multichannel campaigns aimed at named accounts, which costs more but suits harder-to-reach buyers. Pricing splits roughly into retainer, per-appointment, and blended models, each shifting risk differently between you and the vendor. Worth comparing directly: whether you get a dedicated team or a shared pool of reps, how leads are qualified before they reach you, what data and list sources they use, whether they'll work inside your CRM and reporting rather than their own, and how long ramp-up takes before volume becomes predictable.
