These vendors build and host the systems that store your content — text, images, product data, structured records — and hand it off through an API rather than rendering it into a fixed webpage themselves. You get hired to define content models (a blog post, a product, a landing page section), give editors a place to write and manage that content, and expose it so developers can pull it into a website, a mobile app, a kiosk, an email, or all three at once. What changes for the customer is the split of labour: marketing and content teams keep an interface they can use without a developer, while engineering gets to build the front end in whatever framework they actually want, instead of fighting the CMS's own templating system.

People end up here because their existing CMS has become a bottleneck. A traditional system tied content tightly to one website template, so publishing the same product description to a new app or a partner site meant copying and pasting, or building a second CMS from scratch. Developers are stuck maintaining an old templating layer just to keep the site running, marketers are waiting days for small changes, and nobody can easily reuse content across a growing number of channels. Often the trigger is a specific project — a new app, a rebrand, a move to a faster front-end stack — that the current CMS simply can't support without heavy custom work.

The providers here solve this by treating content as data first and presentation second, but they differ in how far they take that and who they're built for. Some focus on developer experience — flexible content modelling, GraphQL or REST APIs, generous free tiers, self-hosting options — and expect you to build the editing and workflow layer around them. Others lean toward marketing teams, with visual editors, built-in workflow and approval steps, and multi-language support out of the box, at the cost of some flexibility. A few position themselves as full digital experience platforms, bundling personalisation and commerce features rather than staying purely headless. When comparing them, look closely at content modelling flexibility, API pricing (per record, per request, or flat), editing experience for non-technical staff, hosting and data residency options, and how much custom development you'll need to get a usable editorial workflow running.
