These are the vendors behind the apps that field reps carry on their phones or tablets when they're out visiting stores, distributors or customers face to face. The core job is turning a rep's day - which stops to make, what to check or sell at each one, what order to write up, what proof to leave behind - into structured data that flows back to head office automatically. That covers route and territory planning, check-in/check-out with GPS or photo proof, offline-capable order and stock capture, catalogue and pricing access on the device, and merchandising tasks like shelf audits or planogram compliance. Once it's in place, a rep's visit produces a record instead of a memory, and an order placed in a shop doesn't wait for someone to retype it into the ERP that evening.
Companies end up looking for this when their field operation has outgrown paper, spreadsheets, or a general-purpose CRM that was never built for someone standing in a stockroom with patchy signal. Typical symptoms: sales managers can't say with confidence which accounts were actually visited this week, orders take a day or two to appear in the system because someone has to re-key them, stock-outs or missed merchandising standards aren't caught until a customer complains, and reps waste time planning routes manually or duplicating admin at the end of the day. The trigger is usually growth - more reps, more territory, more SKUs - reaching a point where visibility and data entry can no longer be managed informally.
Providers split roughly into two camps, and it matters which one you're actually buying. Some are built for outside sales reps whose job is selling and account management - strong on route optimisation, activity logging and pipeline visibility, lighter on inventory detail. Others are built for merchandising and van-sales teams in retail or CPG, with deeper stock counts, order-to-delivery workflows and compliance photo capture, aimed at higher visit volumes. Compare them on offline reliability in low-connectivity areas, how deeply they integrate with your existing CRM or ERP (native Salesforce/Dynamics support versus custom sync), how configurable the visit workflow is without developer help, and whether pricing and setup suit a ten-person team or a five-hundred-person national field force - those two buyers rarely fit the same product well.
