These businesses build and run the systems that store, organise, and publish a company's content — the website pages, product documents, marketing assets, contracts, help articles, and media files that the business depends on. Concretely, they set up or run headless CMS platforms so content can be pushed to a website, app, and kiosk from one place, configure DAM systems so a marketing team can find the right approved image in seconds instead of hunting through shared drives, build ECM systems that keep regulated documents versioned and auditable, deploy OCR to turn filing cabinets of paper into searchable text, and localise content so a product launch doesn't stall waiting on translation. When the work is done, publishing no longer needs a developer, the same asset isn't reuploaded five times under five names, and nobody is emailing round asking 'is this the latest version of the contract'.

People end up here because something in that chain has broken down. Marketing can't ship a landing page without waiting on engineering. Sales reps are presenting outdated pricing sheets because nobody controls what's 'current'. Support agents keep answering the same question because there's no working knowledge base. A compliance audit turns up documents nobody can locate an approval trail for. A global rollout is stuck because content has to be manually copied into ten different language versions. In most cases the company already has content — the problem is that it's scattered, undiscoverable, or locked to a system too rigid to change.

The providers here split mainly on how tightly content is coupled to how it's displayed. Traditional CMS platforms bundle content editing with the website itself, which is fast to launch but harder to reuse elsewhere; headless CMS separates the two, delivering content via API to any channel at the cost of needing developers to build the front end. DXPs layer personalisation, analytics, and multi-site management on top of either approach. DAM and ECM diverge by content type — rich media versus regulated, retention-bound documents — with different rules around metadata, permissions, and audit trails. When comparing vendors, look at how much developer time is needed to make everyday edits, how the tool integrates with your existing CRM, PIM, or DAM, what happens to your content if you migrate away later, and whether search and governance actually hold up once volume gets into the tens of thousands of assets rather than the demo dataset.
