The businesses here build the tools that plug into, extend, or sit alongside a content management system to do a specific job the core CMS doesn't do well on its own. That covers a lot of ground: page builders and design plugins that give WordPress a proper visual editing layer, file comparison and sync utilities that catch differences between document or code versions, PDF and documentation generators that turn web content into shareable files, membership and subscription layers that let creators charge for access, and distribution tools that push content out to video platforms or live feeds in a form that actually gets found. What changes for the customer is usually speed and control — a marketer can rebuild a landing page without waiting on a developer, an editor can see exactly what changed between two drafts, a creator can start collecting subscription revenue without building billing infrastructure from scratch.

People end up looking for these tools because their existing CMS setup has hit a wall. The default editor is too rigid to build the page a stakeholder actually wants. Two people have been editing the same document or config file and nobody can tell what's different without reading it line by line. Files are scattered across drives and email threads instead of one shared source. A team publishing to SharePoint or WordPress finds the platform handles storage fine but does nothing for turning that content into PDFs, or for making video content discoverable, or for letting an audience pay for premium access. None of these are reasons to replace the CMS itself — they're reasons to bolt something onto it.

The providers split roughly into platform-native plugins (built for WordPress, SharePoint, or a specific CMS and installed directly into it) and standalone tools that work alongside whatever system you already run. That distinction matters more than it looks: a native plugin is easier to install but ties you to that platform's update cycle and can conflict with other plugins, while a standalone tool is more portable but means another login, another bill, and another integration to maintain. Beyond that, compare them on depth versus simplicity — a full page-builder suite with hundreds of design elements takes longer to learn than a lightweight comparison or sync utility that does one thing well. Licensing models vary too: some are one-time purchases, others are ongoing subscriptions tied to usage or seats, which changes the maths once you're running it at scale rather than testing it on one project.
