These are the vendors behind the systems recruiters use to stay in touch with candidates before, during and after a hiring process — not the applicant tracking system that logs a candidate's status, but the layer that actually talks to them. That means automated email and SMS nurture sequences, chatbots that answer questions at 2am, career site content that sells the company rather than just listing openings, and databases that let a recruiter search past applicants instead of starting from zero every time a role opens. The practical change for a customer is that candidates stop disappearing into a queue: someone who applied for one job and didn't get it, or who was sourced but wasn't ready to move, stays reachable and gets re-engaged when a better-fit role comes up.

The trigger is usually a hiring funnel that leaks. Recruiters are manually chasing hundreds of applicants by email, response times stretch to days, and strong candidates go quiet or take another offer because nobody followed up. Talent acquisition teams realise they're sourcing the same people repeatedly because there's no record of who's already in the pipeline, or that their careers page and employer brand say nothing to a passive candidate deciding whether to even apply. High-volume hirers — retail, healthcare, BPO, seasonal staffing — feel this hardest, because a spreadsheet or an ATS's basic messaging can't keep pace with thousands of applicants a week.

Providers split roughly into a few approaches. Some focus on conversational engagement — chat and SMS bots that qualify and schedule candidates at scale, built for volume hiring where speed matters more than nuance. Others centre on employer branding and content, giving candidates a reason to apply and a better experience once they do, which matters more for competitive professional roles than high-volume ones. A third group leans on AI sourcing and matching, mining an existing candidate database to surface people who fit a new opening without new spend on job ads. Enterprise talent experience platforms try to cover all of this in one system, trading simplicity for breadth.

When comparing them, look at how well they integrate with the ATS you already run, whether their strength is outbound automation or inbound branding, how they handle candidate data over time (a real talent pool versus a one-off campaign tool), and whether their pricing and support model fits your hiring volume — a setup built for enterprise-scale hiring will be overkill, and underpowered, for a ten-person recruiting team.
