These providers run the checks that sit between an offer and a start date: criminal record searches at county, state and federal level, employment and education verification, drug and health screening, motor vehicle records, credit checks, and in some cases tenant screening for landlords. A customer submits a candidate's consent and identifying details, the vendor pulls from court records, databases, past employers and schools, and returns a report — usually through a portal or an API into the applicant tracking system — with results flagged against what the employer has decided counts as a pass, a fail, or something needing a second look.

People end up looking for this because they've been burned, or they're worried they will be. A reference that didn't check out after the hire, a degree that was never awarded, a driver with a licence that had already been suspended — any of these turns into a liability question fast, especially in regulated industries like healthcare, transport, education, or finance. Hiring at any real volume also exposes how slow and inconsistent manual checks are: someone in HR calling old employers and typing county court websites, results varying by who did the digging, and offers stalling while everyone waits. Add FCRA, EEOC guidance, and a patchwork of state and local ban-the-box and salary-history-style rules, and doing this by hand becomes a compliance risk as much as an efficiency one.

The products differ mainly in how they source data and how much of the compliance workflow they automate. Some run direct county-level court research themselves, which is slower but more accurate in jurisdictions with poor digital records; others lean on national database aggregation, which is fast but can carry more false positives or gaps that need manual confirmation. Turnaround time varies a lot in practice — same-day versus several days — and matters more the higher your hiring volume. Coverage is another real divide: international checks, gig-economy or high-volume retail screening, and tenant screening are handled well by some vendors and not offered at all by others. Worth comparing directly: adverse-action and dispute workflow automation (does it handle FCRA notices for you or leave that to your legal team), depth of integration with your ATS or HRIS, candidate-facing experience for consent and status tracking, and whether pricing is per-check or bundled, since a la carte pricing gets expensive fast once you add drug testing and education verification on top of a basic criminal check.
