These are the tools that take the anonymous traffic hitting your website and work out which companies, and sometimes which named individuals, are behind it. They do this by matching visitor IP addresses against business and ISP databases, then layering on browsing behaviour, page views, time on site, and repeat visits. The output is usually a live dashboard, an alert into Slack or email when a target account shows up, or a feed pushed straight into your CRM or sales engagement tool so a rep can follow up while the visit is still recent rather than days later.
The problem that sends people looking for this is simple: most B2B visitors never fill in a form, so marketing has no idea who is actually researching them, and sales has no way of prioritising accounts that are already showing intent. You might have healthy traffic and almost no pipeline to show for it, an outbound team working cold lists while warmer, in-market companies browse the pricing page unnoticed, or a marketing team that can't prove which campaigns are driving real business interest versus noise. The gap is between traffic and visibility - you know people are on the site, you just don't know who.
Where these tools differ is in how confidently and how deeply they can identify a visitor. IP-to-company matching works well for office networks but degrades badly for remote workers, mobile data and home broadband, so match rates on your actual traffic matter more than any headline accuracy claim - worth testing on a trial before committing. Some go further and attempt person-level identification, which raises real GDPR and compliance questions for European visitors, and several vendors deliberately stop at company level in that market rather than risk it. Beyond identification, they diverge on how much workflow is built in: lead scoring, contact enrichment, automatic routing to reps, versus a plain list you have to action manually. Pricing usually scales with monthly visitors or identified leads, so cost tracks traffic volume more than headcount. Worth comparing on: match rate against your own site, how they handle mobile and remote-work IPs, their compliance stance on personal data, depth of CRM integration, and whether you're buying an identification feed or a fuller sales-intelligence platform built around it.
