These vendors build and run the tools that break training down into short bursts — two-minute videos, a single scenario, a quiz sent through chat or SMS — and get them in front of employees on their phones, in the middle of a shift or a sales call, rather than in a classroom or a two-hour e-learning module. What you're actually buying is an authoring tool for turning existing training material into small chunks, a delivery mechanism (app, SMS, Slack, Teams) that pushes those chunks out on a schedule or trigger, and reporting that shows who opened, completed and retained what. Some also handle the content creation itself, with instructional designers who turn your compliance manual or product catalogue into a course.

People start looking for this when the training they already have isn't sticking. Staff sit through onboarding or compliance modules, pass the quiz, and forget most of it within weeks. Frontline and shift workers — retail, hospitality, healthcare, warehousing — don't have desks or spare hours to sit through an LMS course, so completion rates on traditional training are low and managers end up re-explaining the same things on the floor. Sales teams miss new product details because the update went out as a 40-slide deck nobody opened. Often there's already an LMS in place, but it's built for long-form courses and nobody's engaging with it, so the search is really for something that fits how people actually work day to day.

The providers split roughly into a few camps. Some are primarily authoring and distribution tools you plug your own content into, aimed at L&D teams who want control and already have material to chop up. Others lean into gamification — points, leaderboards, streaks — betting that competition drives completion more than content design does. A smaller group focus on message-based delivery (SMS, WhatsApp, Slack) for deskless or distributed workforces where an app download is a barrier. A few position themselves as full-service, writing and producing the content as well as hosting it, which suits teams with no instructional design capacity but costs more and gives you less control over tone and accuracy.

When comparing them, look at how they handle content creation (self-serve authoring vs. done-for-you), whether delivery matches how your workforce actually communicates (app vs. SMS vs. existing chat tools), how deep the analytics go beyond open rates — do they measure actual knowledge retention or behaviour change — and whether the platform integrates with the LMS or HRIS you already run, since most buyers aren't replacing their whole training stack, just fixing the part that isn't landing.
