Learning Experience Platforms (LXP)

For companies whose learning management system is ignored by employees: platforms that turn training into something people actually use, built around skills, engagement and career growth rather than compliance ticking.

These platforms are what you hire when you need employees to actually engage with training rather than just complete it. The concrete work is building a place where learning content — from internal courses, external libraries, video, peer-created material — gets surfaced to the right person at the right time, based on their role, their manager's expectations, or the skills gap the business has identified. Once it's running, an employee gets a personalised feed of relevant content instead of a static course catalogue, managers can see who is building which skills, and L&D teams spend less time chasing course completions and more time curating what's actually useful.

The reason someone starts looking for this is usually that the existing training setup is technically working but practically dead. The LMS exists, courses are assigned, but nobody opens them unless it's mandatory compliance training with a deadline attached. New hires get a generic onboarding module and nothing after. Managers have no visibility into who's developing which skills, so succession planning and internal mobility rely on guesswork. Content is scattered across a video library here, a compliance tool there, and a stack of PDFs nobody reads. The company is spending on training but can't show it changes behaviour, and people who want to grow their skills don't see a path to do it inside the business — which shows up later as attrition.

Where these providers differ is mostly in what they assume you already have and what they're trying to fix. Some are essentially content-agnostic hubs — they pull in and organise material from multiple external providers and your own library, and the value is in recommendation and discovery rather than authoring. Others lean heavily on social and peer learning, treating the platform as a place employees post and rate content themselves, which works well in collaborative cultures but needs active moderation to stay useful. A smaller group is built specifically around skills frameworks and leadership development, with structured pathways rather than open discovery. Compare them on whether they're standalone or need tight integration with your HRIS and talent management stack, how good their analytics are at showing skill progress rather than just completion rates, whether their content model suits a workforce that's mostly office-based or one that's frontline and mobile-first, and how the pricing scales — per seat versus per active user matters a lot once you're past a few hundred employees.
