These businesses build and run the systems that turn mentoring from a personal favour into a structured, repeatable programme. In practice that means intake forms that capture goals and skills, an algorithm or facilitated process that pairs mentors with mentees, tools for scheduling and logging sessions, goal-tracking and resource libraries, and dashboards that show HR or L&D who's participating and whether it's working. Some also supply the mentors or coaches themselves, others are pure infrastructure for programmes you staff internally.
People end up here because a mentoring effort that worked informally has stopped scaling. There's a spreadsheet of pairs someone in HR matched by hand, sessions that were meant to happen monthly have quietly stopped, and nobody can say how many pairs are still active or whether the programme is doing anything for retention, onboarding speed, or the leadership pipeline. Often there's a specific trigger: a diversity and inclusion commitment that needs a formal mentoring component, a new-hire cohort that needs structured onboarding buddies, or a request from leadership for evidence that development spend is producing anything measurable.
The providers split mainly on how much they do for you versus how much they hand you tools to do yourself. Some are largely self-serve software: you bring your own mentors, and the platform handles matching logic, communication and reporting. Others sell access to a bench of professional coaches or mentors alongside the software, useful if you don't have enough senior people with time to mentor internally. Matching approaches vary too, from simple preference-based algorithms to more consultative, human-checked pairing for higher-stakes programmes like succession or leadership development. When comparing them, look at how much admin time the platform actually saves versus how much programme design work still falls on you, how deep the reporting goes (attendance versus real outcome tracking), whether it integrates with your HRIS or LMS, and whether pricing is per participant or per programme, since that changes a lot once you try to run this across more than one team.
