These vendors build the mechanics that turn a passive audience into an active one: points, badges, leaderboards, streaks, spin-to-win wheels, missions and challenges, wired into a website, app, loyalty programme or internal tool. Hired directly, they set up the rules engine, the reward logic and the dashboard that lets a marketing or product team change point values, launch a new challenge or run a seasonal campaign without waiting on engineering. What changes for the customer is that behaviour becomes trackable and steerable — you can see who's participating, what's driving repeat visits or referrals, and adjust the incentive rather than guess at it.

People end up looking for this when something that should be routine has gone flat. A loyalty programme has stopped generating repeat purchases. A sales team isn't logging activity in the CRM. Onboarding flows lose most users after step two. A training programme has poor completion rates. Marketing wants a promotion or contest that gets people to share, refer or return, and a one-off prize draw or spreadsheet-tracked incentive isn't cutting it — there's no visibility into what's working, and nothing that scales past the first campaign.

The providers split roughly into two camps. Some are campaign tools: quiz builders, spin-the-wheel widgets, contest and social-engagement apps meant to be launched, run for a few weeks, and swapped out — quick to set up, priced per campaign or per month, aimed at marketers who don't want a developer involved. Others are engines meant to be embedded permanently into a product, app or intranet via SDK or API, running the loyalty, retention or sales-incentive layer continuously and feeding data back into a CRM or analytics stack — these need integration work but go deeper on segmentation, reward personalisation and reporting over time.

What's worth comparing: whether you need a one-off campaign or a persistent system, how much developer time the integration actually requires versus what's advertised as no-code, how the analytics let you attribute behaviour change to specific mechanics rather than just showing participation counts, and whether pricing scales by active user, by campaign, or by seat — because those models produce very different costs once a programme actually succeeds.
