These vendors sell the infrastructure behind account-based marketing: tools that let you name the specific companies you want as customers, watch for signals that those companies are in a buying cycle, and then run coordinated campaigns — display ads, personalised web pages, email, direct mail — aimed at the actual people inside those accounts rather than at anonymous form-fills. Once in place, marketing stops measuring itself on lead volume and starts measuring account engagement: who at the target company is reading what, which departments are showing up, and whether the account as a whole is moving toward a buying decision. Sales gets a different kind of handoff — not a name and email address, but a picture of an account's activity across multiple contacts.

People go looking for this when the usual lead-gen approach has stopped matching how their business actually sells. That's typically a company with a defined, finite list of accounts it needs to win — often enterprise or complex B2B deals with several stakeholders — where inbound leads keep arriving from companies that were never going to buy, while the accounts that matter show no engagement at all until a deal is already half-lost to a competitor.
