These vendors sell the software that lets a business send text messages to customers at scale and, increasingly, hold two-way conversations with them. Concretely, that means provisioning a phone number or short code, building an opt-in contact list, sending broadcast campaigns or automated sequences (appointment reminders, abandoned-cart nudges, delivery updates), and giving staff a shared inbox to reply to inbound texts without using a personal phone. Once it's in place, a business can reach customers on a channel that gets opened within minutes rather than sitting in an inbox, and can do it from one place instead of everyone using their own mobile.

People go looking for this when texting has become unavoidable but unmanaged. A sales or support team is already messaging customers from personal phones because it works better than email, and now nobody has a record of the conversation, numbers get lost when someone leaves, and there's no way to send one message to a thousand people at once. Or marketing is watching email open rates fall and wants a channel that actually gets seen, but has no way to collect consent, schedule sends, or measure whether anyone read them. Retail and service businesses often arrive here because no-shows and late payments are costing money that a well-timed reminder text would have prevented.

The tools split roughly into three approaches. Some are built for one-way broadcast marketing: segment a list, write a campaign, send it, track clicks and opt-outs. Others are built for two-way, conversational use — shared inboxes, saved replies, routing — aimed at sales, support or front-desk teams texting customers individually. A third group is developer-facing: an SMS API you build into your own product or workflow rather than a dashboard you log into. Worth comparing across all of them: whether you get a dedicated number or short code (affects sending speed and deliverability at volume) versus a shared or toll-free one, how pricing works (per-message versus subscription tiers, and what happens when you scale up), how much compliance and consent management is handled for you versus left to you, and how well it integrates with the CRM, POS or e-commerce platform you already run — since the value of the messages depends on the customer data feeding them.
