The businesses in this category get paid to do a specific piece of marketing work that someone inside the company either can't do or doesn't have time for. That might be building a website from scratch, redesigning brand assets and guidelines, planning and buying advertising across search and social, writing and sending email campaigns, managing social accounts day to day, getting a site to rank for the terms that matter, pitching journalists and analysts for coverage, or running a lead-generation program that hands qualified prospects to a sales team. When the engagement works, something tangible changes: there's a live site instead of a broken one, a content calendar instead of silence, a steady flow of leads instead of a quiet pipeline, or a brand that looks consistent instead of assembled from whatever the last person had time to make.

People end up here for fairly ordinary reasons. A company has no marketing hire yet and needs someone to get the basics running. A small in-house team is stretched across too many channels and one of them — usually SEO, PR, or paid ads — is being neglected because nobody has the specialist knowledge. A website hasn't been touched in years and is actively costing the business credibility or conversions. A product launch is coming and there's no capacity to plan the campaign around it. Or leads have simply dried up and leadership wants someone accountable for fixing that, fast, without hiring and training a new department.

What separates these providers is mostly scope and structure. Some are full-service shops that will run brand, web, content, and paid media together under one contract; others are narrow specialists in one channel — email, SEO, PR — who go deeper but expect you to coordinate the rest yourself. Engagement models vary too: a fixed-scope project to design and launch a site, a monthly retainer to manage ongoing campaigns, or a performance arrangement tied to leads or bookings, which shifts risk onto the provider but usually costs more per result. Worth comparing directly: whether they've worked in your industry, whether their team size matches the pace you need, how they report progress and what they consider a result, and whether you're buying a dedicated team or getting time-shared across several client accounts.
