These businesses build and run the plumbing behind sending someone a reward without a person manually buying a gift card or writing a cheque. In practice that means an API or dashboard that lets a company issue digital gift cards, prepaid cards, cash equivalents or points, choose from a catalogue of hundreds of redemption brands across different countries and currencies, and automate delivery by email, link or integration so the reward lands the moment a milestone, sale, survey completion or referral happens. Once this is in place, someone running a program can trigger thousands of payouts a month, see who redeemed what, and reconcile the spend against a budget instead of tracking it in a spreadsheet.
The people who go looking for this are usually stuck with a manual process that has outgrown itself. A sales team is running a spiff and someone in ops is buying Amazon cards one at a time. An HR team wants to recognise work anniversaries or wellness milestones but has no consistent way to do it globally. A market research or customer success team is paying incentive fees to survey respondents or referral partners and has no audit trail for finance. Recipients outside the US can't redeem cards from a US-only catalogue, unredeemed balances go unaccounted for, and nobody can answer a basic question like how much was spent on rewards last quarter or whether the program actually changed behaviour.
Providers in this space split roughly into catalogue aggregators, who sell access to a broad marketplace of gift card and merchandise brands and focus on breadth of choice and country coverage; single-currency or prepaid card issuers, who focus on cash-equivalent payouts and payroll-adjacent compliance; and platforms built specifically to plug into HR, CRM or survey tools so rewards trigger automatically from an existing workflow. What actually separates them is worth checking directly: how many countries and currencies they genuinely support versus just list, whether delivery is API-first or requires someone to log in and click send, how they handle tax reporting and unredeemed breakage, what the fee structure looks like (flat transaction fee, subscription, or a markup baked into the face value), and how good their support is for the person actually receiving the reward, since a broken redemption link becomes your problem, not theirs.
