These vendors build the plumbing that lets a company send a message straight to someone's browser or phone lock screen without needing an email address or a phone number on file. In practice, you're hiring them to capture an opt-in (a small permission prompt on your site or app), then manage the sending, targeting, timing and formatting of messages that follow — a back-in-stock alert, an abandoned cart nudge, a breaking news update, a price drop. What changes for the customer is that they get a channel that doesn't depend on someone opening an inbox or checking an app: the message shows up whether or not the person is currently on the site.

People start looking for this when their existing channels are underperforming or don't exist yet. Maybe you've built an email list but open rates have flattened, or you run an e-commerce site and watch carts get abandoned with no cheap way to bring shoppers back. Maybe you have a mobile or web app where usage drops off after the first week because nothing reminds people to come back. Or you're running a content or news site and want a direct line to readers that doesn't route through a social platform's algorithm. The common thread is a gap between traffic you already have and repeat engagement you're not converting, because the only way back to the user is an ad or an email they might ignore.

Providers differ mainly in what they're built to send and to whom. Some are focused purely on web push for content and e-commerce sites — simple opt-in prompts, segmentation by browsing behaviour, and campaign or automation triggers like cart abandonment or price alerts. Others are built for mobile app engagement, handling iOS and Android push through native SDKs, often bundled with in-app messaging. A smaller group positions itself as a general customer engagement or marketing automation layer, where push is one channel alongside email and SMS, useful if you want unified customer data rather than a point solution.

When comparing them, look at deliverability and opt-in rate tooling (how they help you get people to say yes in the first place), the depth of segmentation and automation versus just basic broadcast sending, how well they integrate with your existing stack (Shopify, your CRM, your app's SDK), and pricing — most charge by subscriber or device count, which can climb fast if your traffic is high but engagement per user is low. Support quality and documentation matter more than they seem to at first, since push involves platform-specific quirks (Apple's permission rules, browser changes) that shift without much warning.
