These vendors build and run the software that sits behind a branded community: the forum, discussion board, member directory, groups and content feed where your customers or users talk to each other rather than just to you. Hiring one of them means getting a platform to host that space, tools to moderate it, ways to organise members into groups or tiers, and reporting that shows who's active, who's lurking and who's gone quiet. What changes for the customer is that community stops being a Facebook group or a Slack channel someone half-manages on the side, and becomes a proper product with its own login, its own data, and someone accountable for keeping it healthy.

People end up looking for this when a community has outgrown whatever it was living on. A support forum bolted onto a help desk can't handle member profiles or events. A Facebook group generates engagement nobody owns, can't be tied to CRM data, and disappears the moment the algorithm stops showing it to people. Sales and customer success teams start noticing that peer advocates, superusers and champions are doing real work — answering questions, giving referrals, reducing churn — with no system tracking any of it. Marketing wants a retention channel that doesn't depend on ad spend or a rented platform they don't control. The common thread is a group of engaged people with no proper home, and no way to measure or grow what's happening between them.

The vendors here split mainly on who the community is for and how much they want to own of your stack. Some are built for standalone destination communities — membership sites, courses, paid networks — with monetisation, events and content baked in. Others plug into an existing product or website, adding comments, Q&A or social layers to something you already run. A separate group serves enterprise support and customer communities, integrating tightly with CRM and helpdesk tools so community activity shows up alongside tickets and accounts. Open-source and self-hosted options give you full control of data and design at the cost of needing your own engineering time; hosted SaaS platforms trade that control for faster setup and built-in moderation tooling.

When comparing them, look past the feature list to three things: how members actually get value from being there (discussion, content, courses, or direct access to your team), how much moderation is automated versus manual, and how easily the platform's data — member profiles, engagement scores, activity history — flows into the rest of your marketing and CX stack. A platform that looks rich in isolation but keeps community data walled off will cost you later.
