These vendors build the infrastructure that sends a push notification when a cart is abandoned, triggers an in-app message based on what a user just tapped, fires an SMS when a delivery is delayed, or decides automatically which of a thousand micro-segments should get which message at which hour. The concrete deliverable is a system sitting between your app's event stream and your customer's lock screen, deciding what to say, to whom, and when, then reporting back on whether it worked. Once it's in place, a marketing or product team stops sending one blast to everyone and starts running dozens of small, triggered campaigns based on actual in-app behaviour.
People end up here because their app has users but can't seem to keep them. Installs are fine, activation is fine, then people open the app twice and never come back. Nobody inside the company can say with confidence why, or what to do about it beyond guessing at a generic push notification schedule that gets ignored or, worse, gets the app uninstalled. Often there's also a data problem underneath: events are logged inconsistently across iOS, Android and web, so nobody can build a segment like 'people who viewed a product three times but didn't buy' without engineering time nobody has spare.
The common approach is to unify behavioural data from your app and website into user-level profiles, then let you build automated journeys on top of that data across push, in-app, SMS, email and sometimes web notifications from one place. Where they genuinely differ is in three areas: how deep the personalisation and AI-driven send-time or content optimisation goes versus how much you configure by hand; how well they handle scale and complex event volumes without your engineering team building a lot of custom plumbing; and how good the analytics are at attributing retention or revenue back to a specific campaign rather than just showing open rates. Some are built mobile-first and treat email and SMS as add-ons; others started in adjacent channels and added mobile later, which shows in how native the app SDK feels. Worth comparing on implementation effort, data residency if you operate in regulated markets, and whether pricing scales with monthly active users or messages sent, since that changes the economics a lot as you grow.
