These vendors build the software that sends, sequences and scores the marketing messages a company would otherwise need a person to trigger by hand. Concretely, that means welcome series and cart-abandonment emails that fire the moment someone signs up or drops off, SMS and push campaigns tied to customer behaviour, lead scoring that tells sales who's actually ready to talk, and landing pages or forms that feed straight into the same system. Once it's set up, a marketing team can build a customer journey once and have it run for thousands of people at once, adjusting based on what each person does or doesn't do next.
People go looking for this when marketing has outgrown what a person or a spreadsheet can keep up with. Common triggers: leads are coming in but nobody follows up consistently, the same email is being sent to everyone regardless of what they've bought or clicked, sales complains that marketing hands over unqualified leads, or a growing list means every campaign now takes hours of manual segmentation to send. Often there's already a CRM and an email tool, but they don't talk to each other, so nothing about the customer's behaviour actually changes what they receive next.
The products in this category solve it by connecting three things: data about what a customer has done, rules or workflows for what should happen next, and the channels that carry it out. Where they differ is in which of those three they're strongest at. Some are built email-first with deep deliverability and template tools; others lead with ecommerce data (orders, browsing, product catalogues) and are stronger for retail than B2B; others are closer to a CRM with automation bolted on, better suited to longer B2B sales cycles with fewer, higher-value leads. A few specialise in SMS and mobile push rather than email.
When comparing them, look past the feature list to three practical questions: how well it integrates with the CRM, ecommerce platform or data warehouse you already use; how its pricing scales as your contact list or send volume grows, since costs can jump sharply at certain tiers; and how much technical setup its workflow builder actually requires, since some are usable by a marketer alone while others need a developer to configure properly.
