These businesses are hired to keep a company supplied with facts about its market rather than opinions about it: who the competitors are and what they're doing, what's actually happening to prices and demand in a category, what a target account list looks like once it's enriched with firmographic and contact detail, what consumers say and do when surveyed or tracked over time. Some sell software that pulls in and structures this data continuously — dashboards showing competitor moves, pricing shifts, share of voice, or account signals. Others sell the underlying data itself, licensed as feeds or one-off datasets, or run the research (surveys, panels, mystery shopping, trade data analysis) that produces it.

The trigger is usually that decisions are being made on old information or none at all. A product team gets blindsided by a competitor's launch. A sales team is prospecting from a contact list that's a year out of date and half wrong. Marketing can't say with any confidence how big the addressable market is or how it's shifting. An analyst is spending days each month stitching together numbers from public filings, review sites and spreadsheets that should have been available on demand. Somewhere in the business, someone is making a call that needed real evidence and got a guess instead.

The providers here split along a few lines worth checking before you buy. Some are built on passive data — web activity, transaction records, customs and trade filings — and some rely on active data collection through surveys and panels; the former is faster and cheaper to scale, the latter gets closer to intent and opinion. Some focus on B2B: enriching and validating account and contact records for sales and marketing use. Others are built for consumer and category intelligence: sentiment, pricing, competitive positioning. Compare them on how fresh and verifiable the underlying data actually is, how easily it plugs into your CRM or BI stack, whether you're buying raw data or an analysed, ready-to-use view, and how much geographic or industry coverage you actually need versus what's on the label.
