These vendors build the engine that sits behind a loyalty programme: the rules for earning and redeeming points, tiers or cashback, the customer-facing wallet or app, and the connections into your point-of-sale, ecommerce platform or CRM that make a reward actually appear at checkout. Hire one and what changes is that repeat purchase behaviour becomes something you can design and measure rather than hope for — a customer's history of spend, visits or referrals now triggers specific offers, tier upgrades or gift-card credits automatically, instead of relying on a punch card, a coupon code, or a marketing team manually pulling lists.

Companies end up looking for this when growth is being funded almost entirely by new customer acquisition while existing customers quietly churn or buy less over time, and nobody can say why. Often there's a loyalty scheme already in place but it's a stamped card, a spreadsheet, or a bolt-on discount code that isn't tied to any real customer record, so nobody can see who the valuable repeat customers are, which promotions actually drove a second purchase, or what redemption is costing in margin. The trigger is usually a specific pain: flat or declining repeat-purchase rate, a points liability nobody's tracking, or a new sales channel (a mobile app, a second store, a marketplace) that the current loyalty setup can't reach.

The products differ mainly in how much they assume about your programme design versus how much they let you build yourself. Some are API-first rules engines meant for teams who want to define their own points logic, campaigns and promotions across many channels; others ship a fairly complete, branded loyalty programme you configure rather than code, aimed at merchants who want something live in weeks. There's also a strong vertical split — platforms built specifically for restaurants and hospitality with deep POS integration and off-premise ordering support, versus ones built for ecommerce with native Shopify or BigCommerce apps and on-site widgets.

When comparing them, look hard at integration depth with the systems you already run (POS, ecommerce, CRM, email/SMS), the pricing model (flat SaaS fee versus per-member or per-transaction, which changes cost dramatically as you scale), how the reward types on offer match your business (points and tiers, straight cashback, paid membership, gift cards, referral), and how much reporting you get on programme ROI versus just enrolment numbers. Implementation effort varies a lot too — a rules-engine platform gives more control but needs real engineering time, while a packaged programme gets you live faster at the cost of flexibility later.
