These businesses build the tools marketers and designers use to put together the actual emails that go out to customers — newsletters, promotions, lifecycle campaigns, transactional messages. The work is a drag-and-drop or block-based editor that turns a layout into clean HTML, a library of reusable templates and brand-locked blocks, and some way to check that what you built won't fall apart when it lands in Outlook, Gmail or Apple Mail. Some also add approval workflows, version history and shared asset libraries so a template built once can be reused correctly across a whole marketing team.

The reason someone goes looking for this is usually one of two situations. Either every email still has to be hand-coded by a developer, which means marketing is stuck waiting days for a simple send while the dev queue clears, or marketers are using whatever editor came bundled with their ESP and it's clunky, produces inconsistent branding, and breaks visually the moment it's opened in the 'wrong' email client. Add a legal or brand team that has to review every send, or multiple people editing the same campaign, and the process slows further. The trigger is usually a specific bad experience — a broken email that went to the full list, or a rebrand that means every old template now needs redoing by hand.

The core approaches split roughly two ways. Some tools are standalone editors: you design the email and export the HTML to drop into whatever ESP or marketing automation platform you already use, which keeps you flexible but means the template tool isn't managing your sends. Others are fuller platforms built around collaboration and governance — locked brand kits, approval chains, permissions, integrations directly into the ESP — aimed at teams where multiple people touch a campaign before it goes out. A smaller solo creator or agency will care most about design flexibility and speed; a larger marketing team will care more about brand control, approvals and how well it plugs into the CRM or ESP already in place. When comparing providers, look at how thoroughly they test rendering across real email clients, whether you can still get at and edit the raw HTML if needed, how the approval and version-control features actually work in practice, and whether pricing is per seat, per template, or per send volume.
