These businesses are hired to solve one specific mechanical problem: knowing which affiliate, partner or influencer sent you a customer, and paying them correctly for it. In practice this means a tracking layer that assigns a unique link or code to each partner, records the click and the resulting sale or lead, and attributes it accurately even when the customer switches devices or takes days to convert. On top of that sits a portal where affiliates get their links and creative assets, and an admin layer that calculates commissions, handles payouts, and reports on what's working. Some of these providers also run a network of already-recruited affiliates you can plug into, rather than making you build a partner base from scratch.
The person looking for this is usually running a partner or affiliate program on spreadsheets and coupon codes, or not running one at all despite obvious demand from bloggers, influencers or resellers who want to send traffic. The pain points are concrete: disputes over who gets credit for a sale, commissions paid late or wrongly because nobody trusts the tracking, no way to see which affiliates actually drive revenue versus which just claim credit, and a growing suspicion that some traffic is fraudulent or self-referred. Often the trigger is scale — the program has outgrown manual tracking, or a marketing team has been told to start one and has no infrastructure to do it.
Providers split mainly into two models. Networks act as a marketplace: you list your program, existing affiliates find you, and the network handles tracking and payment in exchange for a cut — good if you want reach quickly but you get less control over who represents your brand. SaaS platforms let you run your own branded program on your own domain, with more control over recruitment and terms but more work to attract affiliates yourself. Beyond that, compare them on tracking method (cookie-based versus server-side or postback tracking, which matters a lot given browser cookie restrictions), fraud and click-fraud detection, how well they integrate with your existing store or CRM, whether payouts support international affiliates and multiple currencies, and pricing — a percentage of sales, a flat subscription, or per-affiliate fees, each of which behaves very differently as your program grows.
