Session Replay Software

Software that records and replays real user sessions on your site or app, so product and CX teams can watch where visitors struggle, click, or drop off, rather than guessing from analytics alone.

These tools drop a script into your website or mobile app and record what individual visitors actually do: every scroll, click, rage-click, form abandonment and dead-end navigation, played back as a video-like reconstruction along with a rebuilt DOM so you can inspect the page as it appeared to that user. Most also generate heatmaps and click-maps across aggregated sessions, flag errors and console logs alongside the replay, and let you segment recordings by device, referrer, conversion outcome or custom event. What changes for a customer isn't just visibility — it's the ability to answer 'why' questions that dashboards can't: why a checkout step has a 40% drop-off, why support tickets spike after a release, why a specific cohort never finds a feature.

Teams end up here after analytics has told them something is wrong but not what. A funnel report shows people abandoning at payment, a support inbox fills with vague complaints about a broken form, a redesign ships and conversion quietly dips, or a mobile app has an inexplicable crash rate on one device type. Nobody can reproduce the issue, A/B test results don't explain themselves, and product managers are making changes based on guesses or the loudest customer complaint rather than what's actually happening on screen. The trigger is usually a specific, unexplained business metric moving in the wrong direction, not a general desire for 'more data.'

The tools split mainly on where they sit and what they're optimised for. Some are built for fast, low-friction rollout on marketing and ecommerce sites, prioritising ease of setup, heatmaps and CRO workflows over deep technical detail. Others lean into product and engineering use cases: JavaScript error capture, network requests, and integration with bug-tracking so a replay becomes a reproducible ticket. A separate cluster is built for regulated or security-conscious environments, with self-hosting, session masking, and insider-threat or compliance framing rather than conversion framing. Mobile-specific replay (native iOS/Android, not just responsive web) is its own capability that not every vendor offers well.

When comparing, look at how they handle PII masking and data residency (this varies a lot and matters if you're in finance, health or under GDPR), how sampling works at scale (recording 100% of sessions gets expensive and heavy fast), how search and filtering work once you have thousands of recordings, and whether the pricing model is per-session, per-seat or usage-based — because costs can scale unpredictably with traffic. Also check whether the analytics and error-tracking features are genuinely useful or bolted on, since that often decides whether the tool sits with marketing, product or engineering.
