These providers build and sell software that decides, or helps someone decide, what to charge for each product, SKU or quote. In practice that means pulling in cost, competitor and demand data, running rules or optimisation models against it, and pushing the resulting prices out to an ecommerce store, a price list, a CPQ tool or a sales team's quoting screen. Some tools track competitor prices continuously and reprice automatically within limits you set; others build elasticity models and recommend where a price should sit to hit a margin or volume target; others just give pricing and sales teams a single, current, auditable view of what something should cost across regions and channels.
People end up looking for this when pricing has stopped being something a spreadsheet or a few people's judgement can keep up with. That's often a retailer or distributor with thousands of SKUs where competitor prices move daily and manual repricing can't keep pace, or a B2B company where reps are discounting inconsistently because there's no visibility into what similar deals actually closed at. It shows up as margin leakage nobody can quite explain, prices that differ oddly between channels or regions, a finance team that finds out about a price change after a customer complains, or a pricing analyst spending days building the same competitor-scrape spreadsheet every week.
The products split broadly into competitor monitoring and repricing tools, which are built for speed and scale on catalogues with lots of SKUs, and pricing optimisation platforms, which lean on demand modelling and machine learning to recommend prices rather than just react to the market. A third group sits closer to quote and deal pricing, giving sales guardrails and approval workflows rather than touching shelf or listing prices at all. When comparing vendors, look at what data they actually need to work well (clean cost and transaction history, or just competitor URLs), how much control you keep over automated changes versus how much you're trusting the algorithm, how deep the integration goes with your ecommerce platform, ERP or CPQ system, and whether they've built for your kind of business — high-SKU ecommerce and marketplace selling looks nothing like B2B distribution pricing with negotiated contracts and rebates.
