The businesses here get hired for marketing work that doesn't sit neatly inside a single channel. That covers a wide range of concrete jobs: building a custom app or digital experience for a brand campaign, running a physical product sampling programme so real people try something before they buy it, operating a B2B media network or newsletter that sells access to a niche professional audience, buying and placing specialised ad formats like mobile rich media or out-of-home inventory, running primary market research to find out what customers actually think, or supplying a marketplace of creators and influencers for a brand to work with directly. What changes for the customer depends on the job, but the common thread is that something gets built, placed, or delivered that a standard search, social, or email agency wouldn't handle.

People end up looking in this category because their marketing problem doesn't map to a normal channel. Maybe leadership wants a physical, tactile way to get a new product in front of consumers rather than another digital ad. Maybe the sales team needs qualified leads from a specific trade or professional audience that generic paid social can't reach. Maybe a campaign needs a purpose-built app or interactive tool and the internal engineering team has no bandwidth. Or maybe nobody in the business actually knows what customers think of the brand, and decisions are being made on guesswork rather than research. In each case, the existing marketing setup — an SEO retainer, a paid media agency, an in-house content team — simply doesn't cover the gap.

Because the work is so varied, providers here split roughly into a few types: agencies that do bespoke, project-based builds and bill for time and specialist skill; media owners and networks that sell access to an audience or inventory they already control; logistics-heavy operators who handle physical distribution and fulfilment at scale; research firms that run surveys, interviews, and data analysis; and platforms or marketplaces that connect brands to a pool of creators, publishers, or channels. When comparing them, the useful questions are: do they own the audience or inventory themselves, or are they reselling someone else's; is the engagement a one-off build or an ongoing subscription to reach; what vertical or geography do they actually specialise in versus claim to cover; and can they show you results from a comparable campaign, not just a client list. Because this category sits outside the mainstream channels, due diligence matters more here than with a typical SEO or paid media vendor — ask exactly what you get, when, and how it's measured before you sign anything.
