These tools are hired to watch everything published about a company — newspapers, trade press, TV and radio broadcasts, podcasts, blogs, and social platforms — and turn that stream into something a communications team can actually use: real-time alerts when a name gets mentioned, sentiment tagged against each hit, clip reels of broadcast coverage, and reports showing share of voice against competitors. Once in place, a PR or comms person stops manually searching Google News and TV listings and instead gets a dashboard or a daily digest that tells them what ran, where, and how it's landing.
The people buying this have usually just been caught out. A negative story aired on local TV and nobody in the building knew until a client called about it. A crisis is spreading on social media faster than the comms team can respond to it. An executive wants to know if a product launch or a scandal actually moved coverage, and the honest answer is nobody's tracking it systematically. Agencies face a version of the same problem multiplied across clients — they need to prove the campaign generated coverage, not just say it did.
Providers split mainly on source coverage and how much interpretation they do for you. Some specialise in broadcast — recording and transcribing TV and radio so a mention can be clipped and shared within minutes — while others lean into digital and social breadth, or print and trade publications that broadcast-focused tools miss. AI-driven sentiment and relevance scoring varies a lot in accuracy, and some vendors still use human analysts to tag or summarise coverage, which costs more but reduces false positives. When comparing them, look at which languages and regions they actually monitor well, how fast alerts fire after something airs or publishes, whether reporting is self-serve or built by an analyst on your behalf, and how pricing scales — by mention volume, seats, or sources tracked — since that's usually where costs creep up as your monitoring needs grow.
