These tools are hired to watch everything published about a company — newspapers, trade press, TV and radio broadcasts, podcasts, blogs, and social platforms — and turn that stream into something a communications team can actually use: real-time alerts when a name gets mentioned, sentiment tagged against each hit, clip reels of broadcast coverage, and reports showing share of voice against competitors. Once in place, a PR or comms person stops manually searching Google News and TV listings and instead gets a dashboard or a daily digest that tells them what ran, where, and how it's landing.

The people buying this have usually just been caught out. A negative story aired on local TV and nobody in the building knew until a client called about it. A crisis is spreading on social media faster than the comms team can respond to it. AI-driven sentiment and relevance scoring varies a lot in accuracy, and some vendors still use human analysts to tag or summarise coverage, which costs more but reduces false positives. When comparing them, look at which languages and regions they actually monitor well, how fast alerts fire after something airs or publishes, whether reporting is self-serve or built by an analyst on your behalf, and how pricing scales — by mention volume, seats, or sources tracked — since that's usually where costs creep up as your monitoring needs grow.
