These agencies are hired to work out the plan before anyone builds a campaign: who the target customer actually is, what makes them buy, which channels are worth the spend, and how the brand should sound and position itself against competitors. The engagement usually produces something concrete — a positioning document, a channel plan, a messaging framework, a content calendar, a go-to-market roadmap for a launch — and then often rolls into execution: the SEO, the email flows, the paid social, the web build, the content production that follows from the strategy. What changes for the client is that marketing spend stops being reactive. Instead of running whatever channel worked last quarter, there's a stated reason for every pound or dollar going where it goes.

People end up here because something isn't converting and nobody inside the company can say why. Marketing spend is going up but pipeline isn't. A rebrand or product launch is coming and there's no agreed story to tell. Different teams — sales, product, marketing — are describing the customer differently, so campaigns feel disjointed. Sometimes it's simpler: there's no in-house strategist, the founder has been doing marketing by instinct, and growth has plateaued in a way that instinct can't fix. In bigger companies, it's often that leadership wants a plan they can defend to a board, not just a set of tactics someone tried.

The agencies solve this by combining research — customer interviews, competitor analysis, data on what's currently working — with a framework for decision-making, then either handing that over or staying on to execute it. Where they differ matters a lot when choosing. Some are strategy-only and will write the plan and leave; others are full-service and will also build the website, run the ads and manage the content, which is convenient but means you're trusting one team's judgement on both the plan and its execution. Size correlates with the kind of client they're built for: small shops suit founders who want direct access to the person doing the thinking, while the larger firms bring more research capacity and can run multi-market or multi-brand programmes but come with more process and higher minimums. Industry depth varies too — some are generalists, others have built real expertise in a sector like SaaS, retail or professional services, which shows up in how quickly they understand your buyer. Worth comparing them on: whether they'll show you research and reasoning or just a deck of recommendations, whether pricing is project-based or retainer, and whether the last few clients they worked with actually kept the strategy after the engagement ended.
