These businesses run the machinery behind banner, native and rich-media ads that follow people around the web and inside apps. Hire one and you get access to inventory — either through an open ad exchange, a private network of publisher sites, or your own retargeting pool built from site visitors — plus the buying interface, creative serving, and the targeting data (behavioural, contextual, device, or first-party) that decides who actually sees each impression. Some are built for retailers and publishers who want to monetise their own audience or product catalogue; others sell straight to advertisers who want to put ads in front of other people's audiences at scale.

People end up looking for this when search and social have stopped being enough, or when they need a way to stay in front of shoppers who visited a site and left without buying. It also shows up when a marketing team is spending on display through a generic ad network with no visibility into where the ads actually ran, what they cost per real view, or whether a bot ever saw them, and they want more control. Publishers and retailers land here too, trying to turn their own traffic or first-party shopper data into ad revenue instead of leaving it on the table.

The split worth understanding is between self-serve platforms, where you set up campaigns, targeting and budgets yourself, and managed services, where someone else runs the buying and optimisation for a fee or a markup on media spend. Beyond that, compare what inventory each one actually has access to — a proprietary network is different from a connection into the open exchange — and what targeting they lean on, since behavioural and retargeting data works differently from contextual placement or a retailer's own purchase history. Worth checking too: minimum spend commitments, how pricing works (CPM versus CPC versus CPA), how much fraud and viewability filtering is built in rather than bolted on, and whether reporting gives you real attribution or just impressions and clicks.
