These platforms are hired to take a piece of creative from a single master version to the hundreds or thousands of variants a modern media plan actually needs — resized for every placement, translated for every market, swapped with different offers or products for different audiences, and packaged in the ad server's or platform's exact format. What changes for the customer is speed and control: a campaign that used to mean weeks of back-and-forth with designers over individual banner sizes or video cutdowns instead gets built once as a template and then automated out to every size, language and audience segment, with the marketing team able to make copy or offer changes themselves without opening a design file.

People end up looking for this when creative production has become the actual bottleneck in the marketing plan. Media buying and targeting have got more granular than the creative team can keep up with — a programmatic or paid social campaign wants dozens of ad sizes and dozens of audience-specific messages, but the studio is still building each one by hand, brand consistency starts slipping as freelancers and agencies each work from slightly different files, and nobody has a reliable way to see which creative variant is actually driving performance versus which one just looks nicer. Often there's also a compliance angle: legal or brand teams can't sign off fast enough because there's no central place to review or lock down approved assets before they go live.

The products differ mainly in where they put the emphasis. Some are built around templated production and resizing at scale — you design once, set the rules, and the system handles the outputs, which suits teams running high volumes of display and social formats. Others lean into dynamic creative optimisation, pulling in data feeds so the ad itself changes by audience, location or stock availability in real time, which matters more for retail and travel advertisers than for brand campaigns. A newer group leans on AI to generate first-draft copy, images or full ad variants rather than just assembling pre-built templates, trading some creative control for speed. Video-heavy and DOOH-heavy workflows tend to need different tooling again, closer to asset management than ad building.

When comparing vendors, look at which ad formats and channels they actually output to natively, how well they integrate with your existing DAM, ad server and media platforms, whether their AI features generate net-new creative or just recombine your assets, and how the pricing scales — by seats, by asset volume, or by ad impressions served, which can change the economics considerably as your campaign volume grows.
