These are the people you hire to work out what your company should look like, sound like and say — and then build the actual things that carry that out into the world. In practice that means naming, logo and visual identity systems, brand guidelines, messaging and positioning documents, and often the pitch decks, packaging, signage, websites and social templates that put all of it into use. When the work is done, a customer should be able to tell your sales one-pager, your homepage and your LinkedIn page were made by the same company, and a stranger should be able to tell what you do and why you're different within a few seconds of looking.

People usually end up looking for this when the mismatch has become embarrassing or costly. A founder's first logo doesn't survive contact with enterprise buyers. Two companies merge and now have two names, two colour palettes and a sales team that doesn't know which deck to send. A product has moved upmarket but the branding still looks like a side project. Or there's no real problem with the assets themselves — the problem is that nobody agrees internally on what the company stands for, so every new hire, agency and salesperson describes it differently, and marketing spend gets diluted across inconsistent messages.

The agencies here solve this two different ways, and it's worth knowing which one you're hiring. Some start with strategy — workshops, competitor research, customer interviews — and only get to design once positioning is agreed; others are execution shops who'll take a brief and turn it into a strong-looking identity fast, with much less discovery. Full-service outfits will also build your website and run your social and paid campaigns, which is convenient if you want one bill and one point of contact, but can mean branding is treated as a subset of a marketing retainer rather than a distinct piece of work. Smaller, founder-led studios tend to be cheaper and more hands-on but slower to scale if you need a large volume of assets quickly; larger firms have more capacity and process but more layers between you and the person doing the actual thinking. Worth comparing directly: whether their past work matches your industry and price point, whether strategy is a separate paid phase or an afterthought, who owns the files and systems once the project ends, and whether they define success as a good-looking deliverable or as something you can actually measure in recognition, consistency or sales conversations.
