These are the platforms companies use to run translation as an ongoing process rather than a one-off project. Concretely, that means holding source content in one place, pushing it out to human translators or machine translation engines, tracking what's translated and what's stale, applying a shared glossary and translation memory so the same term isn't rendered five different ways, and syncing finished translations back into the website, app, or document system they came from. Once this is in place, a product string added by a developer or a paragraph edited by a marketer can move through translation and back into production without anyone manually exporting spreadsheets or emailing files to a translator.

People start looking for this when that manual process breaks down. A company expanding into new markets finds its translation work scattered across email threads, shared drives, and freelancer relationships, with no record of which version of a page or app screen was last translated. Engineers lose time extracting and reinserting strings by hand for every release. Marketing content drifts out of sync with the source language. Different translators use different words for the same product feature, and nobody catches it until a customer complains. Release schedules start slipping because localization is always the last thing done and the first thing to cause delay.

The common fix is a central system that owns the translation workflow, but providers differ in what they build around that core. Some are developer-first, built around APIs, command-line tools, and git integrations so that software strings flow through continuous localization alongside code releases. Others are enterprise workflow platforms aimed at large, multi-brand organisations, with vendor management, QA checks, and connectors into CMS, PIM, and marketing systems. A third group are run by language service companies who bundle their own translators and project managers into the platform, rather than leaving you to source and manage linguists yourself.

When comparing them, look at what actually connects to your existing tools rather than what the sales page claims: your CMS, code repository, design files, or help desk. Check how machine translation is handled — as a first draft with human review, or as the finished output — and how much control you have over quality checks. Look at whether the workflow suits continuous, small, frequent updates or large batch projects released a few times a year, since some tools are built for one and are clumsy at the other. And be clear on pricing structure, since per-word, per-seat, and per-project models produce very different costs depending on how much content you actually push through the system.
