These vendors build the software that records what people worked on and for how long, then turns that into timesheets, reports, and numbers you can bill or pay against. In practice that means a browser extension or desktop timer that clocks time against a client or project, a mobile app for staff who clock in from a job site, or a screenshot-and-activity monitor for distributed teams, all feeding into timesheets that someone has to approve and export. What changes for a customer is that hours stop living in memory, spreadsheets, or paper sheets and start living in one system that can be queried, audited, and connected to payroll or invoicing.

People end up here because something downstream is broken. An agency or consultancy is under-billing clients because nobody logged the extra two hours on Tuesday. A manager has ten people working remotely and no honest picture of what's actually being worked on versus claimed. An HR or ops lead is running payroll off a mix of punch cards, honour-system spreadsheets, and Slack messages, and it's producing disputes and errors every pay cycle. A project lead needs to know whether a fixed-price job is actually profitable, and can't, because time was never captured at the task level. In each case the trigger is the same: decisions about money, staffing, or client relationships are being made on time data that doesn't exist or can't be trusted.

The products differ mainly in what they're optimised to prove. Some are built around client billing — project and task-level tracking that rolls straight into an invoice, aimed at agencies and freelancers who bill by the hour. Others are built around workforce attendance and compliance — clock-in/out, shift rules, overtime, geofencing — aimed at hourly or field staff and feeding payroll systems. A third group leans into monitoring: screenshots, activity levels, app and URL tracking, aimed at employers who need proof of engagement from remote or contracted teams, which raises its own questions about staff trust and what you're comfortable installing on someone's machine. When comparing them, look at how time is actually captured (manual entry versus automatic tracking versus GPS/geofence-based), how well it integrates with the payroll, invoicing, or project tools you already run, whether reporting goes deep enough for the decisions you actually need to make, and how the pricing scales — flat per-seat fees versus tiers that gate reporting or integrations behind higher plans.
